The participants had an enlightening session on Gender Based Violence, conducted by Lucy Lavu, Family Life Coordinator of the Archdiocese of Port Moresby. The session was held to educate young people on gender rights and equality. “It’s important that we understand, who we are, to enable us understand our relationships,” stated Lucy as she invited the participants to share their understanding of the person they are.

Mrs Lucy Lavu and her husband John explained the difference between gender-based violence and domestic violence, equality and equity and the different abuses that occur in society. She further explained laws and consequences that follow. She encouraged young people to know themselves and to always implement the 3 Cs in their lives – choose, challenge and change.

“It is vital that our young people are informed of the need to respect and relate positively to all persons, especially women and girls”, said Fr Ambrose Pereira sdb, parish priest.

A similar session will be held for couples in the week ahead. Sessions on other topics to empower young people will also be held.
