The icebreaker session led by Miss Adi Lydia Tenakanai, was followed by the cutting of the cake and light snacks. In the theatre the Media Education Seminar Programs and sharing by student representatives opened the screening. Dynamic MCs, Ms. Sheryll Isoiamo, and Mr. Vincent Numbos, both teacher-animators, kept the energy high throughout the event.

The DBGYFF is a groundbreaking initiative, of Cardinal Angel Artemé Fernandez SDB, former Rector Major. Fr Gildásio Mendes, Fr Harris Pakkam and the entire Social Communications team have worked hard to offer a platform for our young people to dedicate, to discover and nurture the creative talents of young filmmakers from across the globe. The festival aims to inspire and empower youth in the field of media while promoting social responsibility. “It provides a platform for young people to use their digital devices and communicate positive messages that they are passionate about, thus contributing positively to society,” said Fr Ambrose Pereira SDB, PGS and EAO Social Communications Coordinator. He emphasised the Church’s responsibility toward the next generation and the urgent need for young people to engage in climate action. He encouraged, “Stop, think, reflect, and ensure your actions make a positive impact on the environment, for the good of our future, our mother earth, and our country.”

The films were divided into three categories: Educational, Inspirational, and celebratory films. Between each session, a few shared short reflections on the films. Reminah Vincent noted, “The films introduced a lot of positive messages. They reminded us that we have a responsibility to look after our environment, our mother earth.” Joseph Angkiringo, a future teacher, added, “How will I inspire my students? It depends on my heart.” Another participant remarked, “Whatever challenges we face, we must rise up and never give up.”  “I was blown away with all the short films on youth and climate change and was thrilled to see our entry of Serah David and the La Salle Media Education Group of 2024 win a prize. Congratulations”, said Maliwai Sasingian, Executive Director, The Voice Inc.

“I Am the Change” by Serah David from La Salle Technical School was the only film from Papua New Guinea to be included in the final 120 films. The film addressed the issues of Papua New Guinea - poverty, peer pressure, single parents, limited opportunities, and explored the choice between succumbing to negative influences or pursuing one’s dreams. It highlighted the importance of strong family bonds and the transformative power of personal aspirations. Serah explained, “I Am the Change is a film based on the theme of education, addressing societal challenges in Papua New Guinea. It was placed 3rd in the Global Best 2-Minute Film category at the Don Bosco Global Youth Film Festival (DBGYFF).” As the director, she expressed gratitude to the DBGYFF organizers, the jury, support team, SOCOM, Fr. Ambrose, the MES24 team, and the La Salle Technical Secondary School administration for their support.

“I like the title ‘I Am the Change’, as change begins with individual persons. It starts with me,” said Monsignor Bravi. He then presented certificates to the Media Seminar students, awarding them through their respective animators, recognizing their efforts and dedication.

The program ended with a heartfelt message of thanks from Lucy Napitalai, a Volunteer Animator, who expressed her appreciation to the guests, students, and animators for their participation and dedication throughout the Media Education Seminar 2024. She also acknowledged the support of the Salesian Social Communication Commission (SOCOM) and encouraged everyone to carry forward the lessons learned through this experience. Special gratitude was extended to Fr. Ambrose for successfully coordinating the Media Education Seminar 2024. The event concluded with a message of encouragement and a closing prayer by Fr. Gregorio Bicomong.

The festival has served as both a showcase of talent and a catalyst for social action, inspiring students to take positive steps in their institutions and communities. Several have expressed their desire to share the content with students from different schools. Others wish to collaborate and harness the talent and potential of the young people. Gratitude to all who have made this event possible.

This Don Bosco Global Youth Festival has been the third session.
