St Mary’s Cathedral: “Please accompany me to Rome with your prayers”

This was the call made by His Eminence John Cardinal Ribat MSC to the Catholic faithful and people of goodwill when announcing his departure to the media after the Memorial Mass was held for Pope Francis on Wednesday April 23, 2025.

His Eminence John Cardinal Robat MSC with the Secretary of the Apostilic Nunciature Monsignor Federico Boni.

“This is the first time our nation will be participating in the church in electing the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church and I am very excited to be part of the Conclave”

Cardinal Ribat added that he is happy that the Pacific is represented by three cardinals that will be part of the Conclave: His Eminence Cardinal John Dew – New Zealand, His Eminence Cardinal Soane Patita Paini Mafi – Tonga and His Eminence John Cardinal Ribat MSC – Papua New Guinea.

“This is a moment of joy, a moment of hope and a moment when we are truly united with the Church throughout the world in electing a leader of the Church “

Cardinal Ribat departed Port Moresby on Thursday 24, 2025 for Rome to attend the funeral rites of the Holy Father and to be part of the Conclave that will have 121 Cardinals below the age of 80 to elect the new Bishop of Rome and the Shepherd of the Catholic Church.

“This is a spiritual event; thus, everyone is invited to pray for the Church to go through an age – old tradition to elect a new leader. We pray for the repose of the soul of the Holy Father”.
