Milne Bay Province: The Social Communication Summit in Alotau Diocese, held from March 17 to March 21, brought together students and teachers from Sacred Heart Secondary School and Milne Bay Teachers College. As part of the summit, the Social Communication (SOCOM) team of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands (CBC-PNGSI) conducted a session at the Sacred Heart Secondary School chapel to educate students on the power of communication, particularly through social media.

The event was organized in collaboration with Fr. Jose Roque Arreza, RCJ, the SOCOM Director of Alotau Diocese. The goal was to help students understand how to use media positively and responsibly. The session began with a prayer and an animation song led by Fr. Jose Roque Arreza, followed by the introduction of the SOCOM team, which included Sr. Daisy Anne Lisania Augustine MSC, the SOCOM Secretary of CBC-PNGSI, Jessica Oata SOCOM Assistant Secretary, Mr. Donovan Pintol and Miss Ahisha Mangot.

Each speaker shared valuable insights on responsible media use, emphasizing how social media can be a powerful tool for spreading truth, inspiring change, and strengthening faith.

Sr. Daisy an alumna of Sacred Heart Secondary School and a proud native of Milne Bay Province, encouraged students to become ethical communicators. She highlighted the importance of counteracting negative content online by posting responsibly, creating content that inspires and uplifts others, and avoiding the sharing of violent or misleading information. Her message was further reinforced by Jessica Oata, Donovan Pintol, and Ahisha Mangot, who urged students to use social media wisely to shape a more positive digital space.

An interactive session followed, where students asked questions and shared their thoughts. The discussion focused on how social media can be used as a platform to inform, educate, and inspire. Students were encouraged to become Pilgrims of Hope by using their voices to spread kindness and positivity in their communities.

At the conclusion of the event, Sr. Lily Ventura, DC, expressed her gratitude to the SOCOM team for their visit and for inspiring students to become responsible and faith-driven communicators. The forum was both educational and inspiring, leaving students with a renewed commitment to using media as a force for good.

Many students expressed their appreciation for the talk as they see it as an opportunity to contribute to the society in a positive light.
